PRIVATE LINES
Private lines come in many sizes starting at T-1 and going all the say up to Gigabit speeds.
These services can be provisioned on copper or fiber and can be point to point or multi point. They can be point to point with no special protection or they can protected on a "self healing" SONET RING architecture.
In the Legacy BellSouth network there are two Tariffs that are used the most. The local GSST Tariff and the FCC Tariff. The correct Tariff to use is determined by the traffic on the circuit. If the circuit is used 10% or more for InterLATA traffic, then the FCC Tariff is used. If not, then the local Tariff is used.
When to use private lines...
Depending on the distance, if you are connecting two locations, it is often less expensive to use a private line T-1 then to use other packet switched technologies like MPLS, Frame Relay or ATM. The more locations you need to connect, or the longer the distance, the more cost effective these other solutions are.
